QOTD: Which Movie Features the Best Automotive Product Placement?

I caught Twisters last night, and while it’s a solid nostalgia-based sequel, it’s not without its flaws. One thing I couldn’t help but notice was the heavy presence of Stellantis muscle. One of the main characters drives a Ram TRX, and there’s no shortage of Durangos—I’m pretty sure many of them are packing Hemis, too.

This got me thinking: which movie, whether for the big screen or TV, has the best automotive product placement? Let’s steer clear of long-running TV series for this one—yes, I’m looking at you, James Rockford’s Firebird and Magnum’s Ferrari 308. Heck, there was even a show dedicated to the Dodge Viper.

I’m focusing on films for this discussion (TV series later). Of course, the original Twister plays a role here—more on that below—but I’m sure there are other flicks worth mentioning.

The DeLorean in Back to the Future, Aston Martins and BMWs in James Bond, and so on. You get the idea.

You might feel some déjà vu here—Steph posed a similar question nearly seven years ago and brought up the Dodge Ram in the original Twister. But that was a while ago, and a lot of new films have come out since, so it seems like a good time to get your updated picks.

A Look Back at Iconic Automotive Product Placements

Back to the Future (1985): The DeLorean DMC-12, with its gull-wing doors and stainless-steel body, became one of the most iconic cars in pop culture. Its role as a time machine cemented its place in both automotive and cinematic history.

James Bond Series: James Bond has always been associated with suave, high-performance cars, especially Aston Martins. The DB5, in particular, has appeared in several films, and more recently, BMW joined the lineup with models like the Z3 and 750iL, each showcasing cutting-edge gadgets and sleek designs.

Transformers Series: The Chevrolet Camaro’s resurgence, thanks to Bumblebee, became a symbol of strength and style. Not only did it put the Camaro back on the map, but it also established an emotional bond with fans of all ages.

Iron Man (2008): Tony Stark’s garage is every car enthusiast’s dream, packed with cars like the Audi R8. It helped solidify Audi’s image as a brand synonymous with innovation, luxury, and futuristic design.

Twister (1996): The original Twister made a star out of a red Dodge Ram. The truck’s durability and power were front and center as it battled through extreme weather, elevating its status and appeal in a major way.

The Impact of Automotive Product Placement

Product placement in films does more than just advertise a vehicle. It shapes the public’s perception of that brand and model, often elevating cars to cultural icons. These featured cars often highlight essential attributes—performance, luxury, toughness—that resonate with the audience and make a lasting impression.

Why It Matters

Cars are more than just modes of transport—they’re extensions of the characters who drive them. A well-chosen car can perfectly complement a character’s personality, deepen the narrative, and create unforgettable cinematic moments. When done right, automotive product placements can become legendary.
